Free Business Plan: Robotics Tourism!

As many readers assuredly noticed, a governmental tourism board recently doubled Japan’s inbound visitor goals from 20 to 40 million individuals by 2020. We like the optimism, but for Japan to successfully meet this goal, the standard offerings of food, shopping, and intercultural experience will not suffice, and alternative and niche tourism markets will have to be exploited. Given that both the tourism and robotics industries are considered vital to Japan’s economic future, we suggest the following:

The 2017 Japanese National Robotics Tour Package!

Sometime in late-November, after arriving in Japan and making their way south to Nagasaki, our group of 20 or so individuals will spend their first night in the recently opened, robot-staffed Henn Na Hotel. While definitely gimmicky, the hotel is perhaps a glimpse into the future, and certainly an appropriate start to this tour.

Moving north, the group will spend a day in Nara getting to know Panasonic’s assistive exoskeletons and POWERLOADER research platforms, which are among the world’s most advanced wearable robots. Additionally, while in the Kansai area, they’ll of course visit Hiroshi Ishiguro Laboratories for some face-to-face time with the Geminoid human facsimile robots.

Next, the group will travel much farther north to Tsukuba City and the headquarters of Cyberdyne, Inc., arguably the global leader in assistive and rehabilitative exoskeletal robotics. At this stop, everybody gets to wear HAL! The tour will then move south to Tokyo’s Minato Ward to inspect Kowa Tech’s ActiveRobo SAM remotely controlled surrogate vehicle operator. That evening, it’s off to Shinjuku Ward’s Robot Restaurant, which, while not exactly a serious robotics destination, seems obligatory.

Finally, after several days of cross-country robot fun, the group will head out to Tokyo Big Sight to attend the crown jewel of the tour: the 2017 International Robot Exhibition - probably the largest robotics event the world’s ever seen. Thereafter, the tour can actually run year-round and be tailored to the specific interests of domestic and international journalists, academics, and robotics enthusiasts.

Now is the time! Robotics is booming! The target demographic is only growing!

To the brave entrepreneur who runs with this idea and marries Japanese robotics and tourism, only one thing is expected in return: a reserved spot on the first tour!
