International, ANA-Backed Robot Avatar Concept Wins XPRIZE Visioneers Competition

Most have heard of XPRIZE, the organization that sponsors and organizes an ongoing series of big-thinking competitions intended to spur on large-scale technological advancement and societal development. Fewer know about the XPRIZE Visioneers, a sponsor-driven seeding competition to decide which ideas or challenges get shortlisted as larger XPRIZE competitions.

In an interesting development earlier this month, a US-based, ANA-sponsored, internationally sourced team shared the top Visioneers prize (along with two biotech proposals). ANA’s AVATAR XPRIZE proposal imagines a contest where teams compete to establish stable, remote connections between users and functional robotic avatars, or remotely controlled humanoid forms capable of high-level physical articulation and sensory feedback. Very cool stuff, but...

While the development of practical robotic avatars is a fascinating possibility (with potential in rescue situations, entertainment, travel, exploration, etc.), what truly interested us about this news was the team sponsor. A giant of the Japanese airline industry and a very Japanese company, ANA is actively supporting an almost entirely non-Japanese team that’s based in a foreign country. Again, interesting, but more importantly, it’s encouraging.

For Japanese people who might think their country is too technologically insular and for foreign individuals and groups who still think Japan is too inaccessible, it’s worth taking a look at what companies like ANA are doing: actively reaching out and making an effort to involve Japanese talent and resources in the internationalization of robotics research and development. Even if the prime motivators are PR and tax write-offs, it still helps get things done.

We all know that Japanese governmental and private entities are working hard to make robotics a pillar of the nation’s 21st-century economy, and, arguably, progress is being made toward that end. A part of the discussion too often ignored, however, is that this robotics-driven sector cannot exist in a vacuum, i.e., international markets, minds, and motivating competitions (and even media coverage!) will all be needed to make it work.

Otherwise stated, and with all due respect, this economic sector is likely to be driven less by the Honda Robotics style of ultra-secret research and development and more by what ANA is doing: reaching out to the world, sharing, and taking in good ideas...like, how about avatar pilots?!
