The COMANOID Project: Airbus Brings French and Japanese Robotics Even Closer

The French-Japanese Robot Connection

When SoftBank acquired French firm Aldebaran Robotics in 2013 - a big step on the road to Pepper - it signaled a few interesting shifts: for one, it was curious to see a Japanese firm bypass what must have been a number of capable domestic robot makers in favor of a European one, and two, it prompted serious reconsideration of French robotics capabilities beyond Alderbaran’s respected Nao research platform.

The COMANOID project, first announced in January of 2015, represents a kind of inversion of the above: rather than Japan reaching out to France, we now see French aviation giant Airbus, partnering with the CNRS-AIST Joint Robotics Laboratory, reaching out to Japan in an effort to bring humanoid robotic workers into the aircraft manufacturing process.

COMANOID: Why Humanoids for Aviation Manufacturing?

Traditional assembly line dynamics do not apply in aviation manufacturing; workers must be able to bend at the waist, kneel, balance on an elbow, simultaneously coordinate multiple limbs, navigate through narrow spaces, and, among other dexterities, brace themselves against the feedback of their actions. The consortium concluded that a humanoid form is not only preferred, but essential in aircraft manufacturing, and a fixed-based co-bot platform along the lines of Kawada’s’ Nextage or ABB’s YuMi would not suffice.

In pursuing the COMANOID venture, Airbus brings their obvious expertise; the Joint Robotics Laboratory, for its part, is comprised of teams from CNRS, France’s National Center for Scientific Research, and AIST, Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology - the former will provide the machines’ software and control systems, and latter will provide the hardware, specifically, the Humanoid Robotics Project’s HRP-2 and HRP-4, two of the world’s most advanced and capable bipedal platforms. As of February 12, 2016, work is underway.

The Pleasing Irony of International Robotics Cooperation

“COMANOID” is a portmanteau of “multi-point collaborative humanoids.” With that in mind, we’re left with a pleasing notion, a satisfying feedback loop: the only way for this project to succeed in creating a collaborative humanoid robot is through complex, international human collaboration. It’s nice to see robotics bringing the world together.
