Social Cyborgs: Why Does Everyone (especially Japan) Love Darth Vader?

“He's more machine now than man...”
So declared the ascetic Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, speaking of Darth Vader, the cybernetically enhanced antagonist of the original, globally celebrated Star Wars film trilogy. The fictional cyborg has long been the franchise’s most notable and marketable character, and this rings particularly true here in Japan, but that’s not by accident.

George Lucas, Star Wars’ creator and original writer and director, admired and was heavily influenced by the work of Japanese film great Akira Kurosawa (in particular, Star Wars draws from the narrative of The Hidden Fortress). Unsurprisingly, Star Wars costuming also took inspiration from traditional Japanese battle armor, and nowhere is that more apparent than the iconic mask and helmet atop Darth Vader’s robotic body - they are unmistakable derivations of feudal-era Japan’s Zunari Kabuto samurai headgear.

Now, 38 years since our introduction to the Star Wars universe, with a new installment but days away, the brand’s immense popularity remains. Star Wars-themed gadgets, clothing, housewares and more are available across Japan, and amongst it all, the image of Darth Vader dominates. In addition to product branding, the caped cyborg has been used to sell Goodyear tires, promote Fukuoka’s annual Hakata Dontaku Festival, gaming firm Square Enix and game and toy maker Bandai have both commissioned collectible samurai-style Darth Vader figures, and even the Japan Self Defense Forces sculpted a giant Darth Vader for the 2015 Sapporo Snow Festival. The list goes on.

In Japan, the perennial appeal of Darth Vader owes much to the revered historical imagery the character evokes, but perhaps there is also something universally human at work: at the end of the original trilogy, before he died, Darth Vader salvaged some of his humanity by saving the life of his estranged son. In reality, we are in fact steadily enhancing and mechanizing our physical bodies, and maybe our celebration of and sympathy for a fictional cyborg villain bodes well for the eventual acceptance and mainstream integration of artificially enhanced humans in everyday life.

Admittedly, that is entirely speculative, and our fascination could be much simpler, in that: Darth Vader, the evil but ultimately redeemed man-machine, just looks really, really cool in a samurai helmet. Enjoy the new movie, everyone!
