Mr. Reno's Robot Society #32

In Robotics and Beyond, is Japan the World’s Greatest Innovator?

Fujitsu. Hitachi. Honda. Kawasaki. Komatsu. Kyocera. Mitsubishi.
NEC. Panasonic. Renesas. Seiko Epson. Sony. Toshiba. Toyota. Yaskawa.
They’re all Japanese, of course, but what else do these 15 companies have in common? Of relevance to this column’s discourse, they all have either a proprietary robotics initiative, are majority owners of smaller ventures (or both), or they manufacture components or otherwise develop technologies essential to the robotics industry. But that information is hardly news - what’s more interesting is that these 15 are among a total of 34 Japanese entities present on a recent list of the world’s 100 most innovative companies and institutions.

The Top 100 Global Innovators report, a yearly publication that tracks individual nation-states’ number of patent applications, approvals, and their subsequent performance on a global scale, places Japan second only to the United States. The list is compiled by Clarivate Analytics, formerly known as Intellectual Property & Science, also formerly a division of Thomson Reuters (download the full report, in English, here: http://bit.ly/top-100-2016). Its essential utility is tracking the number and usefulness of inventions, but it also reveals something profound about Japan.

Almost Unbelievable Innovation

Japan holding the #2 spot might seem an obvious, natural ranking, even obligatory. After all, Japan began rising to the position of global technology leader more than half a century ago, and that robotics is a very large part of it all makes sense. However, there is much more to appreciate here.

With its population comprising a mere 1.8% of humanity, Japan currently produces 34% the world’s most highly regarded and accomplished scientific and technological entities. At the #1 spot, the U.S. has a population more than 2.5 times that of Japan and an economy more than 4 times as large, yet it exceeds Japan’s ranking by only 5 companies or institutions, or 5%. This reveals a broadly underappreciated reality: when it comes to science and innovation, on a per-capita basis, Japan actually leads the world by an incredible, almost unbelievable margin.

And so, to answer this week’s leading question:

Judging by its inventions and their usefulness: Yes - in robotics and beyond!
