Honda’s UNI-CUB β (beta) Joins the Haneda Robot Experiment Project

Into the Wild!

An early version of Honda’s self-balancing, omnidirectional mobility scooter, the U3-X, was first unveiled in 2009. In years since, the project has been renamed “UNI-CUB,” and Honda has hosted a considerable number of strictly controlled trials and demonstrations for members of the global press and public (along with very limited leasing). The newest iteration, UNI-CUB β (beta), will soon see real-world, public use by both travelers and airport staff. This is something new!

Officially announced late last week, UNI-CUB β is scheduled to begin testing at Haneda Airport in January. The somewhat egg-shaped mobility device will join a range of robots and automated machines participating in the Haneda Airport Robot Experiment Project (including Hitachi’s EMIEW3 communications and guidance robot, covered in MRRS #22 - LINK: http://newswitch.jp/p/6094).

Robot?

Even though UNI-CUB lives in the same “Honda Robotics” department as ASIMO, it is not unreasonable to ask: is it even a robot? Well...kind of. We’ve previously discussed the difficulty involved in defining that word (MRRS #11 - LINK: http://newswitch.jp/p/4136), and suffice it to say, very few technologists agree. In this case, it’s probably most accurate to state that, like Honda’s Walking Assist exoskeletal devices, UNI-CUB is at least robotic.

Moreover, essentially all of Honda’s robotics projects - including UNI-CUB - were derived from technology developed for pre-and-post-ASIMO bipedal humanoids, which are indisputably robots. It makes good practical sense to keep these projects under the same umbrella, and with the rising popularity of robotics, it’s also good marketing sense - which matters, because after 30 years of cutting-edge, world-leading robotics research, Honda still doesn’t sell any robots!

Learn More...Or, Go for a Ride!

For those with a greater interest in UNI-CUB β and its cohorts, you can learn more about the Haneda Airport Robot Experiment Project at this link: http://bit.ly/haneda-robots (or scan the QR code). For those who prefer the real thing, UNI-CUB β’s trials run from Friday, January 13th to Sunday, January 22nd. Naturally, you’re responsible for your own travel to Haneda Airport, but once you arrive, perhaps a UNI-CUB β will offer you a ride.
