<リノさんのロボット社会論#24> 議論から現実へ「ジャパンロボットウィーク」開幕！

今回の第２４回で「リノさんのロボット社会論」の連載は１周年を迎えることができました。日刊工業新聞に記事を掲載するのは名誉なことと考えており、これまで同様、ユニークな視点で日本に関係するソーシャルロボットのニュースをお届けします。
ソーシャルロボットを採り上げる場合、私たちの議論は一般的に期待先行になりがちだ。それは、まだ日常生活に導入されていないマシンについて、我々がいろいろ思いを巡らせ、結果的に抽象的で臆測に満ちた話になることを意味する。「ジャパンロボットウィーク２０１６」はまさに、論評と直接の経験とのギャップを埋めてくれる絶好の機会となる。
１０月１９―２１日に東京ビッグサイトで開催されるジャパンロボットウィークは、このコラムでも採り上げてきた実際のロボットやアイデアについての会社が一堂に集う。例えば連載の第２２回では、日立製作所の「ＥＭＩＥＷ３」とそれを使った羽田空港での実証実験がテーマだった。ジャパンロボットウィークには日立システムズの出展も予定されていて、小型ロボットの登場を期待したい。
このような実用的な支援ロボットは素晴らしいが、人間を楽しませてくれる要素もまた重要だ。このテーマでは、日本のロボット研究家で玩具製作者である相澤次郎氏のロボットのオモチャへの貢献について第１４回の連載に掲載した。第４回ではワウウィーのロボット犬を紹介した。子供のころの遊びは生涯にわたってロボットへの興味をかき立てることにもつながるので、展示会にタカラトミーが出展するのは非常に喜ばしいことだ。
また、ジャパンロボットウィークは、国内企業に焦点を当てていながらも、参加するのは日本だけではない。連載の第７回で説明したが、新進気鋭のデンマークのユニバーサルロボットをはじめとする産業用の協働ロボットも出展される。それと、第６回で多少触れたテレプレゼンスロボットも、中国のエイミー・ロボティクスなどが展示する。
イベントと幅広い出展者、それに加えて、ロボット革命イニシアティブ協議会主催の「ロボット革命国際フォーラム２０１６」（１９日１４時半から）のようなプレゼンテーションが、最先端のアイデアや実物のマシンに会える貴重な機会となる。オフィスを飛び出して実地体験できることにワクワクしている。それでは、会場でお会いしましょう！

Today’s edition of Mr. Reno’s Robot Society (MRRS) marks the column’s one-year anniversary - the 24th installment. It is an honor and a privilege to be a part of this publication, and it is my sincere hope that the column has and will continue to provide a unique point of view on Japan-related social robotics news. In social robotics coverage, our discussions are generally anticipatory, which means we wonder about machines that have not yet been adopted into everyday life, and this often results in abstract and speculative discourse. As such, we are grateful for opportunities to narrow the gap between commentary at a distance and direct experience - Japan Robot Week is exactly that.
To be held October 18-21 at Tokyo Big Sight, Japan Robot Week will bring together a number of the firms behind the actual robots and ideas we discuss in this column. In MRRS #22, for example, we covered Hitachi’s EMIEW3 and its ongoing trials as a helper robot at Haneda airport. Hitachi Systems is among the scheduled exhibitors, and we’re hoping that their diminutive robot will make an appearance.
Such practical, assistive robots are great, but it’s also important to have fun. Over the past year, we’ve addressed the importance and broader implications of robotic toys by honoring the legacy of Japanese roboticist and toy maker Jiro Aizawa (MRRS #14) and by introducing WowWee’s new robot dog (MRRS #4). Childhood play can spark a lifelong interest in robotics, so we’re very pleased that renowned toymaker Takara Tomy will also be exhibiting.
It also bears mentioning that, while Japan Robot Week does focus on domestic firms, it is not Japan-only: collaborative industrial robots (co-bots), as discussed in MRRS #7, will be represented by Denmark’s up and coming Universal Robots, and telepresence robots, mentioned in MRRS #6, will be represented by China’s Amy Robotics.
This event and its diverse array of exhibitors, in addition to presentations like the Robot Revolution International Forum 2016 (October 19, 14:30), offer an uncommon opportunity to encounter cutting-edge ideas and the actual physical machines. We’re excited for that, and excited to get out of the office and get some hands-on experience - we hope to see you there!
