＜リノさんのロボット社会論#14＞ 相澤次郎を思い出させてくれた市民研究家を追悼

ポップカルチャーと世界に認められたオモチャのロボットのイメージに、日本のロボット研究家である相澤次郎が直接関係していないわけはない。相澤は１９２５年にロボットを作り始め、遊び心のある、その時代特有の製品デザインは世界のメーカーに幅広くライセンスされたり、コピーされたりした。ただ、確実に言えるのは、日本のロボット愛好家の多くは、相澤の仕事と歴史での位置づけを認識しているが、日本以外ではそれほどでもないということだ。
とはいえ、英語での資料もいくつかあり、そこには外国人研究者によって相澤の象徴的なオモチャや、ロボットに対する彼の貢献について書かれている。オンラインで公開されたもののうち、最も優れた資料の一つが豪州メルボルン在住のルーベン・ホゲット氏によるものだ。人なつこく、思慮深いホゲット氏は、長年にわたってＣｙｂｅｒｎｅｔｉｃＺｏｏ．ｃｏｍというサイトを一手に運営し、我々の知る限り、２０世紀のロボットとサイバネティクスについて最も広範かつ徹底的に研究されたインターネット上のライブラリーとなっていた。当然のことながら、そこには相澤次郎の素晴らしい作品も含まれている。
相澤の作品のほかにホゲット氏は、世界中の多様なロボットやサイバネティクス作品について調査し、整理している。彼のサイトは英語で公開されているが、翻訳ソフトによって、実態がよくわからなかったロボットや自動化機器、サイバネティクス関連について綿密に調査した膨大な内容から、いつでも誰でも簡単に学ぶことができる。その内容は平易かつ非常に基本的。現代のウェブサイトに同じような機能はほとんどなく、ＣｙｂｅｒｎｅｔｉｃＺｏｏ．ｃｏｍはまさに宝物のような存在といえる。
さて、なぜ今回のコラムでホゲット氏と彼の仕事を取り上げているのか。悲しいことに、ロボットについての彼の最新の発見や、サイバネティクスの歴史的な前例研究について我々はもはや読むことができない。ホゲット氏は重篤な心臓病に苦しみ、４月末に５９歳でこの世を去ったのだ。

In no way is out of line to say that Japanese roboticist Jiro Aizawa is directly responsible for the globally recognized pop-cultural image of a toy robot. Aizawa began building robots in 1925, and eventually his playful, unique-for-their-time toy designs were licensed to and extensively copied by makers around the world. Assuredly, a fair number of Japanese robotics enthusiasts are aware of Aizawa’s work and its place in history, but the rest of the world...not so much.
However, there are some resources in English, places where non-Japanese researchers can find out about Aizawa’s iconic toys and his groundbreaking contributions to functional robotics; one of the absolute finest online destinations was created by a friendly, thoughtful man from Melbourne, Australia: Mr. Reuben Hoggett. Over the course of many years, Mr. Hoggett singlehandedly curated CyberneticZoo.com, which to our knowledge is the internet’s most extensive and thoroughly researched library of 20th-century robotics and cybernetics. Naturally, it includes a wonderful piece on Jiro Aizawa.
In addition to cataloging Aizawa’s creations, Mr. Hoggett assembled an impressively deep, fantastically varied survey of robots and cybernetic constructs from around the world. His site is published in English, but with modern translation software improving all the time, anyone can easily learn from the seemingly endless pages of meticulously researched, often wonderfully obscure robots, automated devices, and cybernetic enhancements. It is plain and exceedingly basic, with almost none of the functionality common to modern websites, but CyberneticZoo.com is an absolute treasure.
Okay, so why is this week’s column dedicated to Mr. Hoggett and his work? Well, sadly, we can no longer look forward to reading about his latest robotics find or exploration of some newly discovered historical precedent in cybernetics. The affable Australian suffered from an irreparable heart defect, and late last month, he tragically passed away at the age of 59.
Reuben Hoggett’s work is not well known, but it should be, and he should be honored for what he was: a giant in robotics and cybernetics research who made priceless contributions to cataloging and preserving such knowledge. We suggest you go read his entry on Jiro Aizawa, but be prepared to stay for a while - there’s much, much, much more.
